Typical Rim Sizes For AutoX
Hello, I know this is not the wheel and tire section but I decided to post here to see what others are running. Is it better to run a 18in or 17in rim for autox. More importantly for STU

I think you'll find that most people running STU are running 17" wheels. Generally, they're lighter, cheaper, and buying 17" tires is a lot nicer than buying 18" tires.

o ok thanks I thought having a taller tire might help out times or something. I was looking at the rpf1's on tirerack that are 17 x 8.5 i'll just get those and run a star spec 235/45/17. I see a lot of guys running this at the local meets. But also I see a lot of 255/45/17 as well. But that tire isn't ment to fit a 8.5in wide rim if im correct. I wonder if they make the rpf1 in 17x9 without any issues

You mentioned STU in your original post, if thats what you intend on running then you're limited to a 245 tire which would fit nicely on the 8.5" rpf1's you mentioned. If you want to be competitive in the class you shouldn't go with anything smaller either.
17's vs 18's though is mostly a matter of cost vs looks, the difference in performance is minimal in most cases. A rougher lot you'll want the taller sidewall of the 17 to soak up some of the imperfections in the surface. On a smoother course the smaller sidewall of an 18 should yield quicker steering response. This is of course if all other things remain the same, 18's will be heavier unless you spend big dollars.
Another point to add, for auto-x most people look for a shorter tire to help with gearing, the 245/40/17 is a bit shorter than stock while the 245/40/18 is taller. If you're not concerned about following the STU rules that strictly though this is not an issue.

If you have courses that are faster and more open then go with a taller tire for the extra few MPH before banging off the rev limiter. If its generally really tight, then the extra torque and slightly lower speed spool of the shorter tire can help.
A 255 will work fine on an 8.5 rim. Most of the quickest guys are running 285 hoosiers on 9.5" wheels and a 285 hoosier is more than an inch wider than a 255 star spec.
