Question Why is Quarter Master clutch not going to last on DD?

Why is Quarter Master clutch not going to last on DD? So it wont last on DD but it will last on the track?

I called QM and I ask them if its ok to DD this clutch?.....The guy said " If your going to DD your car with this clutch....this clutch is not for your car! "

He didn't even bother to explain why. This is why Im posting it here maybe QM guys could answer it.

The demands on a clutch when daily driven are greater in some ways than driving a car on the track. Why? Because daily driving involves stops and starts that require friction material that allows for some slippage. Clutches designed for track use are often small diameter, unsprung, and have grabby friction material (e.g. metallic) that cannot be slipped. This results in a very noisy (not in a good way) clutch that makes the car feel very heavy and easy to stall when moving from a stop.

QM isn't going to recommend it for DD use because it wasn't designed for that purpose, and they would receive waves of complaints otherwise. There are those who do use these clutches for DD, but they are willing to put up with the tradeoffs.

Due to the amount you will be starting and stopping, the will add more wear on the clutch and burn out the dics faster then you would at the track. I use to run this clutch....it was great for the track, but thats about it. I couldnt stand driving it on the street. Your best bet would be to run the Exedy twin. I also ran that and DD as well. I would run almost every weekend and still held up like a champ. Thats why I went back to it.

If you want to DD the car you can expect 10-20,000 miles out of it. It is a metallic unspung clutch. As soon as the disc wear just a little it loses all it's clamping power. The one nice thing about QM is the rebuilds are cheap around $300 . We do have quite a few customers that DD Qm clutches but they know what they are getting into. Like said before the Exedy twin is a lot better choice for DD but it will not hold the power a QM will. Another nice choice for a DD is the Carbonetic twin but they are more $$.

I have the qm twin disk and I love the way it shifts, but it definately is not for everyone. I was told by qm that you cannot slip this clutch when leaving from a dead stop (normal driving, not racing) because it will wear out the disks much faster because of the disk material. I have not had any issues but it is a pain in the *** to drive sometimes.

By the way, isn't qm coming out with a more daily driver friendly clutch? I could have sworn I read something on evom about it...

My exedy triple cerametallics have lasted about 38k miles a piece on average. The way they go is that they start to grab really hard like an on off switch and become undriveable. If you were to then go try and drag race like I did on the first one, your driveline will protest with lots of repair bills to follow.

I Daily Drove QM for 2 years before my last/final build which is no longer daily drivable. I got 20-22K Miles each time before rebuild was required... Its a great clutch and I had no problems driving it daily

QM is working on 8.5 twin that will drive better than the current 7.25. it will not shift as well at high rpm.
